A Guide to Lip Filler at Simply Injectables

Lip filler is all the rage these days

Instagram bloggers are unabashedly posting about them. They are the subject of major magazine articles. And we all know at least one person who has over done it. Even if you are actively against lip filler – you are still curious about this phenomenon. Here is a quick guide to know more about the way we approach lip filler at Simply Injectables.

Lip filler products used at Simply Injectables

We have 3 products that we choose between for lip filler. Juvéderm Volbella, Juvéderm Ultra XC, and Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC. These all consist of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar in our bodies that can also be found in our serums and moisturizers. Hyaluronic acid is the ultimate plumper. Its molecule attracts 40,000 times its weight in water. The 3 products listed have varying degrees of structural properties and concentrations of hyaluronic acid.

Juvéderm Volbella

Cost: $400

Syringe amount: .55ml

Duration: 4-8 months

Appointment time: 30 minutes total; 1st 10 minutes are for topical numbing agent and consultation

We refer to this product as simply Volbella. Its name rolls off the tongue just as effortlessly as this product rolls out of the syringe. Volbella is soft, light and subtle. It has a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid and therefore has less swelling and a lower juiciness factor. The only lip filler that can go undetected. I say this knowing that would be a serious plus for some and a big waste of time for others. Volbella can refine the shape of lips. It defines the borders. It creates a lip lining effect. You’ll be leaving the house looking like you’ve just discovered your ideal topical Sephora lip plumper.

It is also the gold standard of vertical lip line prevention. For the older client who may be starting to notice thinning, lip inversion and slight vertical lip lines – this is the right choice for you.

Juvéderm Ultra XC

Cost: $500

Syringe amount: 1ml

Duration: 10-12 months

Appointment time: 30 minutes total; 1st 10 minutes are for topical numbing agent and consultation

We refer to this product as simply Juvéderm. This product is for those that want longer-lasting, fuller lips. After the initial swelling has come down, you are left with a natural, pouty and hydrated result. It should still be difficult for acquaintances to detect. Juvéderm is great for lips because its structural composition is slightly tighter than the other two choices which is good for shaping. Your lips have never seen this level of hydration.

Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC

Cost: $500

Syringe amount: 1ml

Duration: 10-12 months

Appointment time: 30 minutes total; 1st 10 minutes are for topical numbing agent and consultation

At Simply Injectables we commonly refer to this product as Ultra Plus. This product is more viscous than Juvéderm Ultra XC but has a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid. This is for clients who want that juice. The pillow factor is at its max capacity with this filler. Clients who want full bodied, pillowy pout this one’s for you.

How we choose which product

Three questions I ask and consider when choosing which product for a client. 1. Is this their first time getting lip filler? 2. What is the client looking to change about their lips? 3. How do they describe the end result they are looking for?

Sometimes I talk about these 3 products as small, medium, large but that is definitely simplifying what these products offer.

Pearls to remember
  • The most common side effects of lip filler injection are temporary injection-site redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, firmness, lumps/bumps, and bruising
    • These side effects are mostly mild to moderate and last 7 days or less
  • Avoid this procedure if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Tell your injector if you have plans for other laser treatments or a chemical peel
  • Patients who experience skin injury near the site of injection with this product may be at a higher risk for side effects
  • Tell your injector if you are on immunosuppressive therapy or have a condition that leaves you immunocompromised as this procedure carries the risk of infection
  • Tell your injector if you have taken aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood thinners, as these increase likelihood of bruising
  • Minimize strenuous exercise, exposure to sun or heat, and alcoholic beverages within the first 24 hours following treatment to avoid bruising and excessive swelling
  • We recommend avoiding lip filler within two weeks of a special event and/or vacation
